Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1293
1856 Flying Eagle Cent. NGC graded Proof 63. A nice bold strike with pleasing even light tan toning throughout. We note a few minor hairlines, one on the reverse beneath CEN. This Key Date rarity appears more like a mnt state example. In 1856 one master die was made for the Flying Eagle cent (today the letters are called the Style of 1856 letters and, among other characteristics, have a somewhat squared center in the 0 in OF; A and M in AMERICA touch, but the M is slightly higher than the A). This identical master die was used to make all 1856-dated dies and, very early in 1857, to make 1857-dated dies with Style of 1856 letters. In all probability, the letter punches used to make this and other master dies were ordered from a private source outside the Mint.

After working dies were made to strike Flying Eagle cents, the dies were dressed or finished to remove burrs and surface irregularities. Proof dies were given special mirror finishes. The Proofs dated 1856 were polished less thoroughly than those dated 1857 and 1858. However, among nearly all Proof Flying Eagle cents, the Proof surface is not as mirrorlike as that found, for example, on 1856-1858 Proof silver or gold coins.

A truly beautiful Proof 63, tightly buttoned down grade concealing no defects. Reflective surfaces in line with the choice quality one expects. This combines with finely textured motifs to give the coin nonstop eye-appeal. The obverse and reverse both are naturally toned. Unquestionably the most famous of all 19th century small cent rarities, certainly a date whose celebrity is generations old within the collecting fraternity. Scholarship has for the time being settled the argument as to the number of 1856 flying eagle cents that were made: perhaps 1,500 to 2,500, some in 1856, and others over the course of the next few years to supply those who missed out on the original allocation. The 1856-dated pieces were made to sway congressmen and others of the need for smaller-sized cents to replace the old unwieldy large cents. In 1857 and 1858, the flying eagles were produced in large numbers for circulation, but the 1856 issue were meant for collectors and others. Above and beyond the raw number of coins produced, this date has always been heralded as a rare offering in U.S. numismatics. Its popularity stretches back longer than 150 years! Attractive Choice Proof 63s don't come along all that often in today's auction venue. We imagine that the coin offered here will be met with serious bids, and the outcome will be that appropriate to a celebrated rarity. Pop 65.

The following complete set of Flying Eagle and Indian Cents was acquired during the 1950's and housed in a custom plastic holder. Stored in a Southern California bank vault for over a half of a century, the coins were recently sent to NGC for grading. After reviewing the grades we feel that NGC was extremely conservative with many of these coins. In addition, the toning has been questioned on a number of the cents. We invite interested parties to personally inspect these coins and judge them for yourself.

1864 Indian Head Cent. Copper-nickel. NGC graded MS-65. Well struck and fully lustrous with just a touch of delicate pastel toning on both sides. The mint went into transition mode in the year 1864. Three different Types or Varieties are encountered in the Indian cents. This is the first, on the 72-grain copper-nickel planchet of 1856-64. It was superceded by a lighter, 48-grain bronze version that came with or without the designer's inition L on it. A desirable date in Gem condition.

Lot 1317
1877 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded MS-65 Red & Brown. A gorgeous well struck gem. A lustrous beauty exhibiting shades of light reddish and golden-brown hues. Popular Key Date to the Indian Head series. The surfaces are bathed in color while the surfaces are simply outstanding, with none of the usual specks or spots that plague the early Indian Cent Proofs. Struck with all the force needed to bring up the devices, and with enough polish on the dies to impart the desired satiny look on Liberty and the wreath. Precious few can compare with this stunning Gem. Any numismatist worthy of the name would be proud to own this coin. As the key date to the series interest in the Proof specimens has strong since many collectors are unable to locate a suitable business strike of this date. At this grade level, not many are around. Pop 74; 8 in 66 RB.

1878 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Star. Boldly struck and an absolute "Wonder Coin" with spectacular vivid rainbow toning on both sides. An amazing gem specimen and certainly among the most beautiful Indian cents we have handled. Could bring a runaway price. Pop 1; the finest Red Brown example graded.

Trivia: Two unassociated events occurred in 1878: Edison took out a patent on the phonograph and a new vehicle, called "Wheels," appeared in the streets of America. It consisted of a large wheel in front and a small wheel in back, and had a connecting bar with a pad upon which the rider could seat himself while he pedaled precariously forward. This was the forerunner of the modern bicycle.
